The stage adaption of Gregory’s Girl hits the People’s Theatre this week.

The Young People’s Theatre, of which Ross Noble was once a member, are performing the stage version of Bill Forsyth’s hugely successful 1980s film, which starred John Gordon Sinclair, Dee Hepburn, and Clare Grogan.

The comedy follows Gregory’s emotional awakening when he falls for a girl.

The trouble is, the only scoring she’s interested in doing involves a football and a net.

The theatre describes the production as a “coming-of-age romantic comedy loaded with wry one-liners on the heartache of turbulent puberty and the angst of unrequited teenage love.”

The production at the theatre on Newcastle’s Coast Road is directed by Chris Heckels, who was responsible for the theatre’s production of The Pitmen Painters, which was the first in the world to feature Lee Hall’s hit play without its original cast.

Gregory’s Girl opens the People’s Theatre’s autumn season, which includes comedies by Alan Bennett and Denise Deegan.

Other productions include Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Jesus Christ Superstar, and Testing Times, an exploration of the life-changing impact of being diagnosed HIV Positive based on interviews conducted in the North East.

Gregory’s Girl runs at The People’s Theatre, Heaton, Tuesday 16th – Saturday 20 September 2014. Tickets are available on the door, from the theatre’s website, or by calling 0191 265 5020.
