Gina McKee has been awarded ‘Performance of the Year’ by the Royal Television Society for her role as Pauline in Hebburn.

The Peterlee-born actor was given the accolade at a ceremony at Gateshead’s Hilton Hotel hosted by BBC Breakfast presenter Steph McGovern.

Hebburn was nominated for Best Drama Production, the award it won last year, but missed out to Vera, a series set in Northumberland based on the works of crime author Ann Cleeves.

Writer Jason Cook wrote on Twitter that he was “very proud” of McKee, who has appeared in both series of the BBC two sitcom.

Fans of the show took to Twitter to celebrate McKee’s award, with Shan Vause (@shaunvaues) writing that the award was “well deserved”, and Ange (@ange_boro) saying that “she’s mint; Hebburn’s mint”.
